Governance of the Company of Goldsmiths of Dublin and the Dublin Assay Office

The Company of Goldsmiths of Dublin, founded by Royal Charter in 1637, is one of Ireland’s oldest guilds and holds a significant regulatory and ceremonial role in the jewellery and precious metals sector. With functional and administrative oversight of the Dublin Assay Office—which is charged with testing and hallmarking precious metal articles—the Company’s governance structure reflects both its historical origins and its ongoing responsibilities in the modern era.

Overview of Governance Structure

At the core of governance for both the Company of Goldsmiths and the Dublin Assay Office is a structured and time-honoured system led by a board known as the Court of Wardens. This Court acts as the primary decision-making body, overseeing operations, policy, and ceremonial matters. It is composed of elected members known as Wardens, who are typically drawn from among long-standing members of the Company.

The Wardens: Governance Board Members

The Wardens act as the Company’s equivalent of a board of directors. These individuals serve staggered terms, allowing continuity of experience while ensuring a regular infusion of fresh perspectives. The number of Wardens may vary slightly from year to year, being a minimum of three, and a maximum of four. The Company of Goldsmiths usually comprises around 10–12 members of the Company. Wardens hold responsibility for:
  • Strategic oversight of the Dublin Assay Office
  • Upholding the traditions of the Company
  • Supervising the financial management and external relations of the organisation
  • Providing support and accountability for the Assay Master and staff.

Wardens

Two principal officer roles stand at the top of the Court’s hierarchy each year:
  • Master Warden (2025–2026): Mr. John Bowen
  • Senior Warden (2025–2026): Mr. Stephen Walsh
In addition, the Master Warden and Senior Warden are supported by a Junior Warden and a Clerk of the Company:
  • Junior Warden (2025–2026): Mr. James Wheldon
  • Clerk of the Company (2025–2026): Mr. Robert White

Assay Master & CEO

  • Assay Master and Chief Executive Officer: Mr. David N. Brady FCA As Assay Master, Mr. Brady leads the Dublin Assay Office in its operational capacity. He is responsible for ensuring the integrity of hallmarking processes, maintaining international standards, managing laboratory staff, and safeguarding consumer confidence in Irish hallmarked precious metal goods. In his role as CEO, he provides executive leadership in the Assay Office, reporting directly to the Wardens, and supporting governance and compliance.
